A warehouse that is part of a century-old flour mill along Shanghai's
Suzhou Creek is being restored to its original look and will be rented
out to nightclubs or other businesses next year, the project developer
said yesterday.
As part of the former Shanghai Fuxin Flour Mill on Guangfu Road, the
warehouse overlooks the northern bank of Suzhou Creek.
"We will keep the original look of the flour mill as much as possible,"
said Zou Yifang, general manager of HeCang Shanghai Investment Management
Company - a Sino-French joint venture that has invested in the project.

She said the face-lift project - which started in August and is expected
to finish by the year's end - will cost more than 12 million yuan (US$1.5
million).
The warehouse was previously used by Shanghai Brilliance Group and is
listed as one of the city's more than 600 excellent historic buildings.
The three-story brick-and-wood house was built in 1913 for Rong Desheng
and his brother Rong Zongjing, two early Chinese capitalists. During a
site tour yesterday, a Shanghai Daily reporter saw that more than 30
wooden pillars have been maintained and their surfaces are sealed with
fiberglass.
Additionally, the gate of the mill, the elevator, the steel-made window
frames, the wooden girders and most of the bricks have also been
conserved to preserve the building's original look.
However, the building's infrastructure - including cables, power supply
and water pipes - has been upgraded, Zou said.
Zou said a batch of foreign companies - particularly fashion and
entertainment companies - have shown interest in renting the building as
of early next year.
"The Fuxin Flour Mill is of great value to reflect the city's key
position in China's industrial history," said Wang Anshi, head of the
renovation department of the Shanghai Housing and Land Administrative
Bureau.
He said the city government also plans to refit other old warehouses and
factories along Suzhou Creek for commercial development. Most of the
buildings will be turned into art studios, clubs and offices.
